Since opening in 2007, Wiels Centre for Contemporary Art has steadily unfolded its activities, in its function as the only major institution for contemporary art in Brussels that is worthy of the name.
A rich programme of solo and group exhibitions by national and international artists, as well as lectures, book presentations, film projections, educational activities, and an international residency for artists, is all achieved thanks to the support of various Belgian government organisations, and donations from artists and sponsors, all in cooperation with other cultural institutions, large and small, from Brussels and elsewhere.
The renovation of the former Wielemans brewery has erased the memory of the former, long since derelict wasteland. The current operation works as a catalyst for the whole district and attracts visitors from Brussels, other parts of Belgium, and the whole of Europe.
We, the concerned and committed citizens, cannot understand that political leaders in Belgium - due to some cited procedural error – do not now want to allocate to the administrators and users of this Brussels heritage the previously promised Wiels renovation grants.
A lack of commitment towards such a Brussels Institute as this harms the image of Brussels both nationally and internationally, not only in regard to contemporary art but also at a metropolitan and social level.
We wish for a solution to be promptly developed and implemented to resolve this matter.
